Two-time NHRA Powerade champion Scott Kalitta was killed in crash when his Funny Car dragster crashed and burst into flames during a qualifying run at the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N J.
Kalitta started his NHRA career in 1982 at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. He was an NHRA Powerade Series Top Fuel champion in 1994 and 1995. and had 18 career event victories, with 17 of them coming in Top Fuel.
Kalitta retired in 1997, but returned for 10 races in 1999. After the brief return Kalitta sat out the next three seasons, returning to the sport in 2003, joining cousin Doug as a second driver for the family’s two Top Fuel dragsters.
